vintage re-do 1940s solid wood couch

oh sunshines...what can I say.........another labour of love....beware...a really really ..long post!

oh sunshines..............what can I say..............he was turned on his end.................in a garage.......and not for sale.................when I spied him...............in all his glory..............he has such history!....apparently he belonged to "gram pa" and was .....loved for many many years.......and it so showed in his ............condition.........................warning warning this is a way long post.......so grab a cup of something!

......as you can see by the pictures above.......the webbing is so secure still.....no paint on them or near it.........no need for any repair on any part of this......what great shape......I got lucky!
..............they just do not make furniture like this anymore..................just don't!

he sits...........with old fashioned welting/webbing under the original cushions.......with not a bit of sag.....still so securely attached....and ....oh the heavy brown vinyl cushions.........with the springs......oh wow..........I hope to find the picture of these in the before condition................................be still my heart..............

..out in the intense heat......painting......I remember the neighbor across the street......oh he will be so cute.....as I lay on the ground with another box of tissue! ..........trying to get the sweat out of my eyes................man that stings huh!.............we laughed............drive by's they waved!

............one couple stopped........got out of the car and wanted to buy him in as in condition because he re-finished furniture and loved this little piece........he is very well made.......great bones................................they were in love..........................of course I had to decline......

......I had the cushions recovered by one very talented upholsterer....................wow cushion love!

using vintage tablecloths................ at a suggestion of a dear friend.............and an old white vintage chenille bedspread..........for the sides..............I painted him..........white of course.............sanded and waxed...................this has to be the most comfortable couch I have ever sat on...................or crashed for a much needed nap!.................:)
..............so reminded of when I was growing up.............Mom had one like this.......in our living room.......from Sears.....solid tweed cushions and much thinner......... but lovely just the same...more of a modern twist mid-century type ........for her....but they were so child friendly at the time... :)....ours had the metal legs and arms........this lovely is solid wood.............do not know the maker of this wonderful guy.............wish I did..................

........he has .........wing sides......solid wood.....wood plugs that cover the hardware....missing some but that doesn't bother me at all.........just adds more charm I think......................he is....just vintage wonderful................and in just excellent shape...........what a character...............

such style....such charm.....such workmanship................I so appreciate the old well made..............don't you?................such a joy to work on and to complete.....another longer than usual event.....................weeks and weeks...sweat and tears..................so ....I've become somewhat attached............oops..............:)............not sure if I can let him go now.................he is sitting in the patio...............in all his glory........my cabin cottage with picnic baskets patio............he is so ............pristine............solid.........just down right handsome!..................

I hope you enjoy his pictures and his new outfits............. I am just enamored with him.....I guess..............and ........because each side of each cushion has a different tablecloth piece...........you can change his look........................love it...................

have a wonderful day sunshines..............I know I will! hugs =^.^=

I just found your web-site and love the sofa re-do in 1982 i bought a sofa almost like it for $50. it still had original cushions (horsehair) but mine is still stained in a dark wood stain my husband refinished it and done a good job but i love the white, and I may do that, some time,I covered the cushions but they are all similar to yours. it is in our bedroom facing a bay window.I love it.

  43. I have almost the same one and the chair. Got the set for $80! All refinished except what to do with the cushions! I am going to make down filled "envelopes" so I can sink into them. They wanted about $21/yd for the fabric I wanted. Maybe I will scope out table cloths! Thanks for sharing!
